Athens Airport → Piraeus Port

The busiest land-to-sea transit in Greece · 52 km · 40–90 min depending on how you go

If you are landing at ATH and your real destination is an island, you are not actually going to Athens — you are going to Piraeus, the working port a 50-kilometre hop south of the runway. It is the busiest land-to-sea transfer in Greece, which is why the airport built a direct metro line, the city runs a 24-hour express bus, and a regulated taxi rank sits 30 seconds from arrivals. Pick the one that matches your bags, your budget, and your ferry time — there is no wrong answer, only trade-offs.

Heads up — read before you choose

Plan a 4-hour minimum buffer from landing to ferry departure

Every forum thread says the same thing: do not try to thread a same-day connection. Luggage takes 40 minutes, the metro runs every 36 minutes, Piraeus has 12 gates, and your gate might be a 20-minute walk from the train. Sleep near Piraeus the night before if possible.

Ferries actually leave on time — and strikes happen often

Boarding closes 15 to 30 minutes before departure. Greek transport strikes (typically with 24 hours of notice) can shut down the metro and buses for a day. Travel back to Athens the day before your flight home, not on the same day.

Organised pickpocket gangs work the airport metro (Line 3)

Real and recurring — the single most reported complaint across travel forums. Distraction tactics at the doors, especially at the Syntagma and Monastiraki interchanges. Front pocket, hand on zip, money belt for valuables. Do not terrify yourself, but do take it seriously.

Piraeus is huge — your ferry gate might be a 20 to 40 minute walk

Gate E1 (Rhodes and the Dodecanese) is around 40 minutes on foot from the metro. E2 and E3 (Crete) are 20+ minutes. E6 to E10 (Cyclades) are 10 to 15 minutes. Look up your gate before you arrive — paper printouts at the port entrance are the source of truth, not Google.

Taxi touts inside arrivals are scams — only use the rank at Exit 3

Suited touts with laminated 'official' rate cards quote €100 or more to Piraeus. The legal flat fare is around €55 to €60 day, €70 to €75 night. If anyone approaches you inside the terminal, ignore them and walk to the official taxi rank.

Uber, Bolt, and FreeNow all dispatch yellow taxis — by Greek law

Do not be surprised when a normal yellow cab pulls up: in Greece these apps work through licensed taxi drivers on the regulated meter, not private drivers. You get the app convenience, the same regulated fare, and a paper trail.

Which should I pick?

Match your situation, get a pick. There are no wrong answers — these are the most common patterns.

  • Solo or couple, carry-on bags, daytime arrival

Cheapest, predictable, drops you next to most ferry gates

    Metro
  • Family with kids and big bags

Driver handles luggage, drops at your specific gate, no scramble

    Private transfer
  • Red-eye flight, landing 2am

The metro is closed; X96 runs 24/7 for €5.50

    X96 Express bus
  • Ferry departs within 3 hours of landing

A pre-booked driver tracks your flight, no taxi-rank queue, drops at the gate

    Private transfer
  • Cruise passenger heading to E11 or E12

Walking to E11 from the metro is 20 to 30 minutes — not worth the saving

    Yellow taxi
  • Strict budget, fine with extra walking

€5.50, runs 24/7, terminates right at Karaiskaki Square

    X96 Express bus

How it works

Direct ride on Line 3 (Blue) — no changes. Airport → Syntagma → Monastiraki → Piraeus terminus, right next to the port. Trains every 36 minutes from the airport side, every 10 minutes through the city centre.

Where to find it

Inside the airport, follow the 'Trains / Metro' signs — a 10–15 minute walk from arrivals through the food court level. Buy at the ticket machines (cards and cash) or tap a contactless card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay at the blue validators.

Predictable timing
Big luggage in summer

Good to know

  • •Pickpockets ride this line — front pocket only, hand on zip, especially boarding at Syntagma and Monastiraki.
  • •The 3-day Tourist Ticket (€20) includes the airport leg both ways and unlimited city transport. Best value if you are staying in Athens first.
  • •The Piraeus terminus is closest to ferry gates E6–E10 (Cyclades — Santorini, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos). Use the free port shuttle for E1, E2, E11, and E12.
  • •Reduced fare (€4.50) covers ages 6 to 18, students under 25, seniors 65 and over. Under-6s are free.

How it works

A direct coach service from the airport down the coast through Glyfada and Faliro to Karaiskaki Square in Piraeus — it terminates right next to the central ferry gates (E6–E9). 41 stops in total. Runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Where to find it

Curbside outside Arrivals, between Exits 4 and 5. Look for the 'X96 PIRAEUS' sign on the stop pole. Buy a ticket at the booth between Exits 4 and 5, at the on-board ticket machine, or tap contactless at the blue validator on board.

Best for · not great for

Overnight arrivals
Tight budget
Direct to most ferry gates
August rush hour
Big bags when the bus is full

Good to know

  • •Luggage goes in a central pen on the bus — locals say it is secure, but keep your day bag on you.
  • •In August, traffic from Glyfada through Faliro can stretch this to 90 minutes or more. Build slack into your ferry timing.
  • •Late evening (after 20:30) the route sometimes terminates earlier at Karaiskaki rather than going further into the port — check the destination sign.
  • •This is the cheapest middle-of-the-night option when the metro is closed.

How it works

Regulated yellow taxis on a (mostly) flat fare. The Piraeus run sits outside the standard €40 city-centre flat-fare zone — it has its own quoted rate, and sources vary slightly (€54 to €60 day, €70 to €75 night). Tolls and the airport surcharge are normally rolled in. Luggage over 10kg may be extra.

Where to find it

Official rank outside Exit 3 on Arrivals level. Ignore anyone who approaches you inside the terminal — touts ('parataxi') sell €100+ rides with laminated rate cards. Walk past them straight to the rank.

Best for · not great for

Tight ferry connection
Heavy bags or kids
Drop at a specific gate (E1, E2, E11)
Strict budget
Solo backpacker

Good to know

  • •Agree the fare in EUR before the boot closes. 'Approximately' is not an agreement.
  • •Check the meter says '1' before midnight — '2' is the night or outer-zone tariff and should not kick in until 00:00.
  • •Four passengers maximum in a standard yellow taxi. For five or more, or lots of luggage, you need a minivan (private transfer).
  • •Uber, Bolt, and FreeNow all dispatch the same regulated yellow taxis — by Greek law these apps cannot send a private driver. You get the app convenience, the same metered fare, and a paper trail.
  • •If your ferry is at E1, E2, or the cruise terminal (E11, E12), a taxi at the gate is dramatically less painful than walking from the metro in summer heat.

How it works

Book in advance online. A driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign, tracks your flight (waits for delays), handles luggage, and drives you to a fixed price regardless of traffic.

Where to find it

Pre-book online — Welcome Pickups, Athens Airport Taxi, GetTransfer, and similar providers. Pay by card; some accept cash on arrival.

Best for · not great for

Families with kids and bags
Cruise passengers (drop at the cruise terminal itself)
Early-morning ferries where missing a taxi means missing the boat
Solo with a backpack and €50 to spare

Good to know

  • •Worth the €20–30 premium over a taxi for families, cruise passengers, or any ferry within 4 hours of landing.
  • •The driver knows the port layout — ask to be dropped at your specific gate, especially for E1, E2, or E11 and E12.
  • •Flight tracking matters: a delayed flight does not cost you a missed pickup.

Once you are at Piraeus — find your gate

Piraeus is a 2.5 km horseshoe with 12 numbered gates. Look up your gate on the ferry company's site or the big board at the port entrance — do not trust map apps for the day's berth assignment.
